Square 1
Today was my first day at the new site. The staff and kids here are soooo much better. The staff is so nice and friendly, and make it a point to look out for you (except for the manager). The kids are equally sweet but one did give me trouble. Okay, being an Asian chick in America never really gave any issues until this one blonde, white 5th grade brat came up to me today in the beginning of my shift.
“Are you from China?”
I was so naive to answer, “No.”
“Where were you born?”
Answering again to my complete innocence, “In America. That’s why I can speak English so well. Why? Where are you from?”
“America...,” she yanks down the ID badge on my chest with my photo, “You look like you’re from China.”
I wasn’t offended because there’s nothing to be offended by, but I was for sure shocked least to say. In a world so PC it was new to see someone act like that so boldly. It wasn’t until later when she came up to me during the Academics period saying “ching-chong ching-chong” that I then wanted to deck her in the face. I just walked away instead because yea right like I would start pummeling some 11 year old. No, but she doesn’t even stop there. Later she comes up to me again as I’m walking around the classroom and tries to stare me down. Even though it’s the Academics period, most kids are just fucking around on their tablets, gossiping, or playing with toys and I’ve got nothing better to do so I equally stare back. I don’t break eye contact until she starts trying to get closer and closer to my face. One of the strict rules in this job is to not touch other kids (for obvious reasons). I back up and simply state, “I’m not allowed to touch you.” Seriously it seemed like her face got close enough to fucking kiss me or something. Surprisingly, the other girls her age took my side and told her to mind her space.
Obviously this whole situation seemed odd to me because I don’t even know this girl. I’m new. I haven’t talked to anyone at all. She was the one that approached me and then wanted to pick a fight out of nowhere. I keep an eye on her for the rest of the period and I find out, no one fucking likes her. When she tries to sit at the same table as those other girls, they try taking the extra seat away, but once that fails, they just go to another table to sit without her. After her mom comes to pick her up, I go up to that table and ask the girls about her. Another group of girls nearby hears me asking and equally join in to tell me that apparently no one likes her because she’s mean and annoying, and her only friends are the kindergartners. That seemed even more odd. She doesn’t have ANY friends her age?
It wasn’t until later when I asked the other staff about her that I find out she has bipolar disorder and ADHD.
Eh. Whatever. I’m not here to be some older guardian savior to these kids. I’m just here for a paycheck. The other staff can care for and coddle her, but for now I might just steer clear. They’ve also shared their personal instances with that girl and equally warned me to just leave her be if I find it too uncomfortable to mold to her needs. The other kids are very sweet. Compared to the other site, these older kids are more kind and don’t mug you.
I’m here at this site for the next two weeks until I leave for my month long vacation back to my motherland county. Oh and I have my rave coming up pretty soon, too! I hope everything goes smoothly. I hope tomorrow’s shift is better too. Till next time!
TLDR: I got picked on by some 5th grader.
